My name is Alison Waddell and I own and operate Phoenix Farm Fiber with my husband, Vince. I am a crazy goat lady, obsessed with mohair and I love the fiber arts! It is especially gratifying to see the process of creation from beginning to end: from growing the fiber on the animal to seeing a finished product.
I think my obsession with all things fiber started when I was a child. My grandmother taught me how to crochet when I was 8 years old. The first completed project that I can remember making was a lopsided afghan for my mother -- one that she still has all these years later!
As I grew up and made my way through life, I found myself living in a fast-paced, high pressure, career-driven world in the Baltimore-DC metropolitan area. But I could always grab that basket of yarn by the couch and somehow find serenity in creating something with hook and string. My love for crochet led me to other hobbies as well: sewing, knitting, spinning yarn, dyeing. All of these passions, as well as a need to find a more fulfilling and self-sufficient lifestyle, led me to seek a life outside the cubicle and away from the hustle and bustle.
One day my husband and I were volunteering at a horse rescue outside of the city we lived in and had our “Aha!” moment. It was midwinter, cold and blustery, and we were cleaning outdoor stalls at the rescue. Vince stopped with a pitchfork full of muck and declared “I would rather do this all day than be in a cubicle.” And that was it! We packed up a moving truck and headed south to seek a different kind of happy.
Fondly remembering summers and weekends spent on the farms of friends and family, we found our piece of heaven on a dusty old horse farm in western South Carolina, far from the commuter traffic of Washington DC. For the next 8 years, we painstakingly and lovingly transformed that rough patch of land into a beautiful and serene holistic farm where we first began raising our goats and sheep. Everyone thought we were crazy, but now they, too, have seen our vision come to life. It changed our lives forever!
In this newfound life, not only do we enjoy our self-sufficiency and caring for our animals, gardens, and orchard, we are also amazed at how everything on the farm has a story to tell. We can look at a bag full of mohair locks and share memories about the animal who created that luxurious fiber. I can grab a sweater that I made and know that the wool came from my sheep, Beck, and I can remember the day he was born and how he still follows his big brother around the pasture. There is serenity and beauty everywhere here. Even watching the goats graze or the chickens peck, it reminds us that there is nothing better than right now; this moment.
In the summer of 2017, we moved the farm (and ALL the animals!) from South Carolina up to Berryville, Virginia, but our love for this life is unchanging. We are very thankful for what we have discovered in farming and we are glad to be able to share it with all of you! So connect with us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter and follow along in this crazy, happy life!

We Love Our Animals!
Phoenix Farm Fiber is a farm-based business in beautiful Berryville, VA. Our white and colored Angora goats are sheared twice per year, then each fleece is hand-skirted and processed to offer our customers a quality product for their fiber needs. Our sheep are sheared every spring from our own small flock of Romeldale / CVM, Cotswold, and Shetland sheep. We love all of our animals and get such joy in caring for them!
We Support Small Farms
Phoenix Farm Fiber is committed to supporting small farms and fiber producers in the United States. We frequently reach out to these farms and mills to augment our own inventory of wool and mohair. We do not source any of our fiber from large international resale organizations. We are dedicated to the sustainability and success of American small farms. As such, we only select high quality fiber from domestic family farms. Your purchase of any of our products, including raw fiber, hand-dyed yarn and handcrafted creations, will support the domestic production of natural fiber!
