Yellow, Maise, Super Soft, Heritage Breed, Rare, Conservation Breed, Next to Skin Soft

This listing is for a 4-ounce braid of super soft Romeldale / CVM wool roving hand dyed in gorgeous shades of the perfect yellow — not bright yellow, not pastel yellow, but a soft, sun-kissed golden yellow. It is a Phoenix Farm Fiber colorway called “Goldenrod.”

This beautiful naturally gray wool was overdyed to achieve soft, slightly heathered colors. It is a soft, fluffy, easy to spin wool! I use only food grade dyes so that your fiber is not only safe, but is undamaged by harsh chemicals — no phosphates, copper, or harsh mordants. Once dyed, the fiber is washed several times in hot water with all natural soap and air dried. The resulting yarn will be non-toxic and colorfast in vibrant shades of maise and sunflower! This wool is super easy to spin and makes a soft and next-to-skin soft yarn! This wool is raised on my farm in South Carolina and is supplemented with additional California Variegated Mutant (CVM) wool purchased from another small American farm in northern California — it is 100% domestic! The color makes for beautiful spun yarn from a light lace weight up to a super bulky weight.

This wool is great for spinning on a wheel or drop spindle as well as for felting, photography, or mixed media art projects! Romeldale / CVM sheep are considered by the Livestock Conservancy to be a critically endangered American sheep breed with a global population of fewer than 2,000 animals. At Phoenix Farm, we keep 2 of these beautiful animals for wool: Detroit and Beck (pictured last). We also support other breeders in the United States who are working to raise numbers (and awareness!) and help keep this amazing breed from going extinct.

The California Variegated Mutant (CVM) is a lovely color variation of the Romeldale sheep. The roving in this listing is made up of wool from our 2 CVMs, Beck and Detroit, as well as 2 lovely CVM ewes from California, Annie and Tilly. The Fleece and Fiber Sourcebook lauds Romeldale wool for its natural colors, fineness, length, and crimp. It reports that Romeldale wools “are a good selection for next-to-the-skin garments and for knitters who want soft, lofty yarns.” This wool does not disappoint! It was carefully sheared and skirted to remove soiled fiber and vegetative matter. The fiber was processed at a LEED-certified mill in North Carolina that utilizes eco-friendly solutions like solar power and sustainable materials. The resulting roving is light, soft, and easy to spin in a natural gray with copper streaks throughout. It spins into a nice ecru or cream yarn. It is a lovely natural color, but also takes dye well.

This listing is for 4 ounces of CVM roving that has been neatly braided for ease of spinning. Hand wash in cold water, lay flat to dry.

This wool does felt. To see my full selection of spinning fibers, check out my shop section labeled Roving, Spinning Fiber.

Stored in a pet- and smoke-free environment.

Happy Spinning!
