“Coal” Raw Mohair Fleece, 2 lb 5 oz
Full fleece, unwashed, heavily skirted, very clean

Mohair Fleece – Coal
This listing is for 2 pound, 5 ounces of a beautiful unwashed mohair fleece from our goat, Cole. These locks are long, soft, and lustrous! Locks average approximately 4 inches long and are a gorgeous blend of black and light and dark grays that we call “Coal.” This would make lovely yarn or stunning natural doll hair! The color of the fleece would allow for deep hues when over-dyeing. Mohair takes color well and is easy to wash and dye!
This fleece was professionally sheared and skirted. It has been picked through by hand to try to remove foreign matter and debris picked up in the field. Great care has been taken to remove all soiled, matted, and short portions of the fleece. It is virtually free of vegetative matter; a very clean fleece! This fleece is stored in a smoke- and pet-free environment. It is ready for you to wash, dye, pick, card, spin, or felt! It would also be perfect for doll hair, wigs, and reroots!
How to Wash Mohair
Washing mohair is easy to learn! If you’ve got a sink, soap, and water, you can wash your own mohair. Phoenix Farm Fiber has created a step-by-step, fully illustrated, FREE tutorial on how to wash your mohair fleece. You can see it on our “Farm & Fiber Blog” or by clicking here.
How We Raise Our Mohair
Phoenix Farm hand shears its mohair twice per year from holistic pasture-raised animals — it is 100% natural! We raise our sheep and goats without the use of hormones or unnecessary antibiotics and they graze on lush grass grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizer. Our herd of angora goats range in color from white and cream to silver, black, brown and red animals as well. They are lovingly raised and their fiber humanely sheared.
Meet the Goat
This lovely fleece came from our beautiful goat, Cole (named for Kenneth Cole during our year of naming kids after clothing designers). Cole is the son of our very own Sweet Pea and is such a sweet goat — check out that sweet face and beautiful fiber in the last photo. He is a wether – what we call a neutered male goat. We find that because wethers don’t produce the hormones of a buck nor are they taxed with the breeding demands of the females, they tend to have the loveliest fleeces because all of their energy goes into growing it. We know that you will love Cole’s fleece! Read more about Cole and meet our other goats by clicking here!
* Please keep in mind that these animals are pasture raised and are not covered. I do heavily skirt each fleece to remove second cuts, debris, and soiled fiber. However, some minor amounts of small VM may make it through. In opening up the curls after washing, you may see VM that has been trapped inside the curl fall out.
